Death Valley National Park Begins Critical Water and Wastewater System Modernization Project

Death Valley National Park · NPS release dated Oct 22, 2026

Death Valley National Park broke ground Oct. 21 on a $69.5 million, three-year project to rebuild the water and wastewater systems around Furnace Creek, funded by the Legacy Restoration Fund.

The work replaces the Cow Creek water treatment plant building, rehabilitates the Furnace Creek plant, upgrades the shared wastewater facility and replaces more than 30 miles of water and sewer pipe. NPS says the current systems, many from the 1960s, have caused outages, boil-water advisories and temporary campground closures.

Construction is phased, but visitors may see short local water outages and reduced parking. Changes will be posted at nps.gov/deva.
