Grand Canyon National Park Seeks Public Comment on Trans-Canyon Telephone Line
Grand Canyon National Park is taking public comments through midnight Nov. 11, 2026, on a plan to deal with safety hazards from the historic Trans-Canyon Telephone Line, which runs through the inner canyon along the Bright Angel and North Kaibab trails.
NPS says hanging and fallen wires create risks for helicopter and emergency operations and can entangle wildlife. The plan would remove wire where needed and add visibility markers to wire that stays, while leaving poles, cross-arms and insulators in place.
The line was rebuilt by Civilian Conservation Corps crews in 1935 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Comments go through the NPS PEPC planning website, and all comments become public records.
